Thoroughly disappointing is the only word that can be used to describe "Withdrawal: A Novel" by Michael Hoffman. While Hoffman's style is excellent the story lacks strong plot and any compelling conflict.
The story ambles from chapter to chapter, the only common thread the main character, Len Fishman, and his father's hospitalization in a nursing home due to Alzheimer's. While Len learns some interesting details about the man his father really was versus the man he appeared to be, there is no driving force that moves the story forward or compels the reader to keep turning the page.
