Romance, anyone? Talented Mary Lennox recreates the age of the ton, when appearance was all, a time when a lost fortune or ill-meant rumor would cost your position in society that thought of itself as the end-all, be-all of the world. A dead wife, a leopard attack and sickness send Aubrey Drelincorte back to his estate in Breme to recuperate and gather his defenses against the expected accusation of having shot his wife. Attended by his loyal friend, Ran Dass, he is nearly a recluse as illness and nightmares take their toll. Into this quiet world, Lilias Merrit flees her father's expectation that she will wed the man chosen for her, a man she fears and despises. Acting as a supplicant, she begs for any job in the house that will keep her safe from the clutches of her determined suitor. Aubrey does not want any high-born woman in his house and when he is forced to face Lilias, he says she cannot stay, no matter the circumstances. For an unwed woman of society to live in the house of a bachelor will ruin her reputation. What will the ton say? But circumstances and Ram Dass conspire to keep her in the house as a nurse to Aubrey as his illness requires care and a relationship develops, much against their wills. At the time, Lilias is only thankful to be safe from her ex-suitor while Aubrey awaits those charges from his dead wife's lover that will bring him to trial for murder. Highly recommended. Much more than a romance, My Lord Beast is a finely woven tale of mystery and mayhem with lifelike characters you will long remember. There is something for everyone in this fun read. Guaranteed to hold your interest from the first to the last. Enjoy.
